Senate is the Legislative Branch of the Missouri Students Association. The role of this body is two fold. Internally, the Senate serves as a check to the executive and judicial branches by creating policies, rules, and regulations that guide the operations of the Association. Externally, the senate works to represent the interest of the student body within and outside the MU community through several means including collaborating with other entities, and the creation of resolutions.
Senate is made up of 71 senators. Of said senators, 50 seats are held proportionally by the percentage of total enrollment of each Undergraduate Degree Program (i.e. if the College of Arts and Science makes up 28% of the total population, then 14 seats—28% of the 50 reserved—are for A&S students). If these seats aren’t filled during the election in the Spring, then 10 of these seats will become at-large spots. 20 seats are reserved as at-large seats (30 if aforementioned lack of representation occurs), which means that these seats are available for those who start attending meetings and petition to be a senator. In this case, a candidate comes to a senate meeting, tells the speaker that he or she would like to run at-large and then introduces themselves to Senate via a one-minute speech. Senators then either vote in favor or in opposition of the candidate. The final open seat is reserved for the Senate speaker.
