Get Involved
There are 4 ways to get involved in MSA as a Senator.
The first is a residence hall senator. Each residence hall floor is allowed one senator. The election for this senator will take place at the very beginning of the fall semester and they will be elected by a vote of the floor. If someone is interested in becoming a residence hall senator they can talk to their CA/PA. There are usually a lot of residence hall seats unfilled so there are a lot of opportunities to get involved in the res halls. If their floor is unrepresented they can talk to the CA/PA any time through the course of the semester and become the senator for that floor.
The election for Greek senators is usually left up to the chapter. Chapters are allowed one senator unless they have 140 or more members and then they are allowed 2 representatives. In the past MSA has done a poor job of following up with chapters to make sure their representatives are there, but that won’t be an issue this semester.
There are also senate seats for off campus students. In order to become an off campus senator, a student can come down to my office inside A022 Brady Commons and pick up an off campus senator petition. They will be required to obtain 35 signatures of off campus students in order to fill this seat. There is a limited number of seats depending on total enrollment but as a percentage this is usually our least filled type of seat.
The last way to get involved within senate is an At-large senator. These are senate seats for basically anyone who wants to get involved. The person can be any time of student (Greek/ non Greek etc.) They can be elected at any time during the semester and there will be a call for anyone wanting to be an at large senator at the beginning of every full senate meeting.
Senators will be required to attend weekly committee meetings at 7:00 pm in the Memorial Union south (room will depend on committee) and full senate meetings at 6:00 pm every other Wednesday in Stotler Lounge in Memorial Union
